You should know that there are three types of deserts in Morocco: Reg, Erg, and Hamada. However, we can distinguish two great deserts in Morocco which are very well known, and which receive thousands of visitors each year: Erg Chigaga and Erg Chebbi. The two deserts are far from each other. Erg Chigaga is near the M’hamid El Ghizlane region, while Erg Chebbi is very close to the village of Merzouga. You can reach them easily despite the long road, if you start your trip from Marrakech. The two deserts have different landscapes that are worth seeing. Also note that there are also other deserts like Erg Lihoudi, Erg Tinfou, Hamada du Draa, and Reg Agafay…

Where in Morocco is the Sahara Desert?

There are several deserts in Morocco, each of which has a different desert type and has distinguished landscapes. However, there are two main deserts that receive all the attention. If you start your trip from Marrakech, you can reach the Erg Chebbi desert near the village of Merzouga going southeast. While the Erg Chigaga Desert is in the south around M’hamid El Ghizlane. The Moroccan desert region is quite vast and has a large area. Thus, it has several deserts, including less known, but also rich: Erg Tinfou, Erg Lihoudi, Hamada du Draa, and Reg of Agafay…

Is there a desert in Marrakech?

No, unfortunately, there is no desert in the city of Marrakech. So, you will not find dunes in the city, or even in its surroundings. So, to see a real desert you will have to take a road of several hours to the South, direction Merzouga or Mhamid. However, if you just enjoy small dunes, there is the Agafay region at 32 km from Marrakech or the surroundings of the city of Essaouira on the Atlantic coast. There are magnificent landscapes that you can also admire, as well as several activities that are practiced there and that you can try. Such as quad or buggy tours, camel rides…

What do you wear to the Sahara Desert?

You need to consider the activities you plan to do. In all cases, the clothing should only be functional. A long sleeve top, wide pants, comfortable shoes, and a scarf. This simple outfit can easily do the trick by protecting you from the sun and ensuring your comfort.

Is the Sahara Desert in Morocco safe?

The Moroccan desert is a very well-known tourist area. Locals are therefore used to seeing and welcoming tourists every day. This activity is even a livelihood for them. The area is thus secured, and it has never been mentioned that there have been problems before. Just take your precautions and ask about as much as possible of information before venturing out into the desert. The best thing still is to be accompanied by a qualified person who will watch over your safety and comfort.

How far is the desert from Marrakech?

As there are two main and best-known deserts in Morocco (Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga), there are therefore two different paths. Erg Chebbi is easily accessible via the road which leads directly to Merzouga. The latter is 561 km from Marrakech. However, if you choose the Erg Chigaga desert, you will have 450 km of road to reach M’hamid El Ghizlane and approximately 40 km more to access the Erg. Know that each of the two deserts deserves a full visit, given the breathtaking landscapes they both have.

What do you need to bring to the desert?

It depends on whether you go alone or accompanied, on an organized trip for example. In all cases, the essentials are water, sun protection, glasses, hat, comfortable shoes, scarf, camera … But if you’re taking this trip to the desert alone, then don’t also forget: a GPS, a map, a compass , a lighter, a power bank, an aids bag … Finally, everything depends on your needs and what you want to bring!
